2026 | 5′ | for Viola D’Amore, electronics and visuals
This piece represents my first attempt of transforming a subway map into a graphical score, a concept that bridges visual and musical expression. By interpreting the map, I have created a generative musical piece where moving trains trigger electromagnets, which in turn excite the sympathetic strings of a Viola d’Amore. All the sounds you hear are exclusively from the acoustic instrument.
The performer embodies the role of a train, navigating stops and transfers with precision, much like playing a video game. The piece is governed by a set of strict rules that dictate both the player’s actions and the musical signals, aiming to translate the map into a coherent and engaging musical narrative.
Balancing the creation of these rules and mapping parameters with the need for visual clarity proved challenging, nevertheless this idea still intrigues me and asks for further attempts.
Thanks to Leslee Smucker for her curiosity and contribution to realize this performance.
