No_Clipping

2026 | 10′ Multi Channel Fixed Media

Composed for the Game of Life system (gameoflife.nl/) during the WFS Festival 2026 at the Institute of Sonology.
Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) is a sound production technology designed specifically for spatial audio rendering. Virtual acoustic environments are simulated and synthesised using large numbers of loudspeakers. The innovation of this technology is that sound can appear to emanate from desired virtual starting points, and then move through space in many possible defined spatial pathways. The WFS system from The Game of Life consists of 192 speakers, which are arranged in a square formation of 10 by 10 meters.

Program notes:

“Successful no-clipping is suddenly traveling from one place to another, unhampered by distance or physical obstacles. All manner of living creatures and physical objects can be no-clipped. In 1990s video game culture, this reality-breaking was designated “no-clipping.” The term first appeared in December of 1991 […].
**What does it feel like?** Many wanderers describe it as falling through a thin curtain of absolute darkness. Others deny sight and sensation. Of course, as in the case of astral travel, the phenomenon experience can be radically different.
_The world turned translucent, almost transparent, and shot by like a roller coaster, in every possible direction, while you felt that you were actually moving in slow motion. What a rush!_”
