Computer

[2024] 14′

Prepared piano, live electronics, live visuals.

This piece comes from the mixture of different ideas. The synthesised sounds are inspired by a technique introduced by Jaap Vink, that I learned in the Voltage Control Studio during the lessons of Kees Tazelaar. After understanding how to produce the sounds in the analog studio, I worked on Max MSP to recreate the same result on my laptop, and progressively, over the months, upgraded the patch adding my own touch. This piece is one of my attempts to write something towards an open score. Originally it was part of a collaboration with the pianist Miki Kawashima (hence the Japanese title in the score). With her, I worked mostly on the concept: a tribute to the archetype of the computer matched with my nostalgic memories from the late 90’ when I had my first computer, recycled from my father that is an IT teacher and programmer. Because I wanted to use Windows 95 as a visual element, we also came out with a visual storyline that aims to capture the audience in an intimate and introspective journey. Structurally, the piece starts from descriptive or real sounds, like the noise of the machine and of keys when typing, towards an imaginary trip with detuned synths and unconventional chords.
